An offline photo vault should let you open locally stored files without an internet connection. That does not tell you whether every original is downloaded, whether backup is enabled or what you would need after losing the phone.
Compare the local-use claims in current developer documentation, then use the checklist below to check your own import, unlock, viewing and export workflow. These are documented capabilities, not results from our own device tests.
Storage is chosen per album: on the device or in your own iCloud account. General document storage is advertised, but supported formats and preview behavior should be checked.
Backup and recovery
Your own iCloud; local copies matter offline. Key phrase; optional key backup via iCloud Keychain. A phrase does not replace missing photo files.
Check before you choose
iCloud albums need a local copy for offline access. Its privacy policy describes usage analytics and purchase-data services.
The on-device vault can be used without an account. Cloud Vault adds paid backup and sync. General document support was not established in the reviewed sources.
Backup and recovery
Optional premium Cloud Vault; an account is required. Optional recovery email for the app/album password. Cloud Vault has a separate password that the developer cannot recover.
Check before you choose
Cloud Vault needs an account and a separate password. Deleted local files need an existing usable backup for recovery.
The developer documents local storage without an identity account, plus photos, videos and general files. Backup uses iCloud storage; backup and multi-device sync are separate features.
Backup and recovery
iCloud backup starts on and can be disabled. Pattern and recovery phrase are separate access paths; the developer does not offer an email reset.
Check before you choose
iCloud backup, analytics and crash diagnostics start enabled. Media optimization is also on by default; check the Original setting.
Free download does not mean all features are free. Public US listings and developer documentation checked 1 November 2026; no native device, checkout or restore tests performed. Store offers can change.
A file can look local without the original being on the phone
A thumbnail or smaller copy may remain visible while the full file needs downloading. Keepsafe’s Space Saver documentation describes compressed local copies and cloud originals. That is a reason to check the particular mode, not proof that every Keepsafe workflow fails offline.
The starting photo library matters too. Apple’s iCloud Photos guidance explains how storage optimization can leave smaller device copies. Download the originals you intend to test before disconnecting.
Check your own disconnected workflow
Use non-sensitive samples first. Record the app version and settings so you know which workflow the result covers.
Prepare local input. Keep a photo and short video fully downloaded. Add a document only if that format is supported.
Disconnect. Turn off Wi-Fi and cellular connections; note whether first-time setup or purchase was completed earlier.
Import. Check whether a local file can be added without fetching it from a cloud-only source.
Restart and unlock. Close and reopen the app, then use the ordinary unlock method.
Open and export. View the full item and save a readable copy to a local destination. Check quality and metadata separately.
That check establishes what happened on your device with those settings. It does not establish that an app never sends network traffic when connected, that its cryptography has been audited or that all media formats behave identically.
Decide what happens after device loss
Offline access helps when a connection is unavailable. It does not create another copy of the library. Before removing originals, understand which backup contains the files, how it is restored and which password or recovery phrase it requires.
Vaultaire’s app backup starts enabled but can be disabled; separate device backups are another setting. Encamera’s local albums and iCloud albums have different dependencies. Private Photo Vault documents an optional cloud service. Review the chosen app’s source links before treating a local-use setting as a complete backup policy.
Does offline use also mean no account?
No. One describes a network-dependent workflow; the other describes identity and setup. A service can require an account at setup and later expose local files, or avoid developer signup while using an Apple Account for cloud storage. The account-dependency comparison follows each task separately.
